Rick's Remedies: Why pH Matters

If your water is aggressive, it can beat up your pool surfaces and equipment, then take things from it!

Wait!  What?! WATER can be aggressive?

Let's Talk About pH

WARNING:  Science Content Ahead!

pH is the measure of how acidic or basic your water is.  Generally, the acceptable range of pH is between 7.2-7.6 for pools.  But what do these numbers mean? To oversimplify, the lower the number, the more acidic the water is.  The higher the number, the more basic the water is.

Don't worry, we're only goin' as deep as kiddie pool today!  laughing

The human body has a pH of 7.5, which is where most people will feel the best level of comfort in water.  So, to keep it super simple, you want to keep your pool within those ranges to keep the water comfortable for your swimmers.  But in a wonderful stroke of good luck this is also the range where pool chemicals perform their best and last the longest!

Famous Last Words: "I don't care if I'm itchy!  I've got a big ol' bucket of pool chemicals.  I don't care what my pH does!"

Well, you should!  pH plays one of the biggest factors in the overall balance of the pool water.  If the water balance isn't maintained, it's not just inefficient and uncomfortable, it can damage EVERYTHING the water touches!  Want to know how?

If your pH is lower, it is actively trying to break down (beat up-hello Mr. Aggressive Water) and take things away from everything the water is touching.  Pool surfaces, equipment, swimmers...EVERYTHING!

This action of removing prematurely wears down pool surfaces and equipment causing them to fail.  This means you will have to replace them a lot more frequently.

On the other side, if your pH is higher, it can cause water to deposit scales.  Scale deposits can form rough, unsightly surfaces and clog up important components of pool equipment.  The end result?  More rapid wear & tear on your pool equipment resulting in more frequent replacement.

Notice a trend?

If you don't maintain water balance, your whole pool gets harder and more expensive to operate.  Think of it as a WHOLE Pool Chemistry, not just water chemistry.  This approach will keep your pool looking AND operating great for years to come!

  • "Just wanted to thank you for a great product. After four weeks of trying several different products and also adding way to much chlorine, we can finally see the bottom of our pool. Added Revive!® at 6PM last night, by the time we went to bed, we could notice a difference and when I got up this morning everything had settled to the bottom. Used the vacuum for about an hour this morning and were swimming this afternoon. Will probably have to vacuum once more, but so glad this product was recommended to us."

  • "Easy, simple, worry free…these all describe how my pool maintenance has been since I started using EZ POOL! I have a big pool and it is not a big job with E-Z POOL®, just once a week. Once the pool is open and clear in the spring, I just have Caryl’s experts test my pool sample once a week to make sure the balancing chemicals and pH are good. Algaecides are not needed. Brush, brush, brush, as Caryl recommends and my pool is beautiful all summer! Also, it is gentle to the skin and does not effect your hair color. I highly recommend E-Z POOL®!"

  • “I have used the EZ Spa® now for four years. It is the best spa treatment I have ever used. It makes the water feel really soft and refreshing. I use it once a week and forget it. My spa stays crystal clear. I love this stuff. Not to mention when you use EZ Spa® you don’t have to buy so many other chemicals. I also noticed that EZ Spa® is extremely gentle on the skin. I can’t say enough about how good this stuff is. Try it, you’ll love it!”
